Building an Audience as a Composer: Taking Control of Your Own Visibility

Building an audience is something I’ve thought about for a while—but haven’t always been consistent with.

I’m currently taking a class called Building an Online Audience, and to be honest, I’ve been behind. Between composing deadlines and dealing with personal responsibilities, it’s been hard to keep up. And I think that says a lot about how easy it is to push this side of things aside.

But the reality is, it matters.

A lot of opportunities today don’t just come from your work—they come from your visibility. How many people know you, follow you, engage with what you’re doing. Whether we like it or not, that plays a role in how projects and collaborations come your way.

In a sense, building an online presence is about having agency. Instead of waiting to be discovered, you’re actively putting yourself out there.

I’m still figuring it out. Still inconsistent. But I’m starting to see that treating it as an afterthought isn’t the way forward.

And I want to hear from you -- see if you have any advice/tips -- how do you balance actually doing the work with putting yourself out there?
